Walt Secord - Labor Member of the NSW Legislative Council
Walter “Walt” Secord was elected to the NSW Parliament on May 24, 2011 as a Member of the Legislative Council.
Currently, Mr Secord is the Shadow Minister for Police; Shadow Minister for Counter Terrorism; Shadow Minister for the Arts and Heritage; and Shadow Minister for the North Coast. He is also a member of the Labor leadership group.
During his parliamentary career he has served as Shadow Treasurer, Shadow Special Minister of State, Shadow Minister for Health, Mental Health, Medical Research, Roads and Water.
He is deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Israel; deputy chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Armenia; deputy co-chair of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Animals; and secretary of the NSW Parliamentary Friends of an Australian Head of State.
Prior to entering State parliament, Mr Secord held senior advisor roles at the State and Federal levels including chief of staff to the NSW Premier; chief of staff to the NSW Treasurer; Director of Communications to the Federal Opposition leader and Director of Communications to the NSW Premier.
Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Mr Secord is the son of an Ojibway-Mohawk father and an Anglo-Canadian mother. He grew up on the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation reserve.
Mr Secord is interested in Indigenous issues, community development, the prevention of genocide, inter-faith activity and the abolition of the death penalty.
