Bernice Tesara is a trumpeter, composer and educator based in Sydney. Currently completing her Bachelor in Jazz Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium, she has performed extensively on the Sydney music scene in venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Qudos Bank Arena, Mary’s Underground, the Women’s Club and Foundry 616.
An eclectic artist, she has played with the likes of G Flip on Triple J’s Like a Version, Andrew Dickeson as part of his “Fresh Sounds” Quintet and most recently, with the 2021 Australian National Jazz Youth Orchestra which debuted at this year’s Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Festival. As part of the Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra #1, she was part of an album recording with one of the world’s leading saxophonists, Will Vinson, and continues to sustain her involvement with multiple Conservatorium Jazz Orchestras.
She is an advocate for greater representation of women in jazz, having passed through programs such as SIMA’s Young Women’s Jazz Workshops and the Young Women’s Jazz Orchestra. Bernice Tesara teaches at the acclaimed Jazz Workshop Australia. She has been featured as a Young Artist in the inaugural issue of Dingo magazine, which aims to celebrate Australian jazz and the diversity within it.
She fronts her band “The Return of the Bern", a jazz quintet which performs her own compositions amongst jazz standards.
