Andrew Motion recently said that he regrets the poems he wrote while Poet Laureate 1999–2009. How, then, would Australia’s own National Poet Laureate be different? Is this role a real agent for change and social justice and how would it differ from the UK/other model/s?
Sarah Holland-Batt, poet, editor and critic has had stunning success with her third collection of poems, The Jaguar, a portrait of her father’s Parkinson’s Disease which has also informed Sarah’s advocacy in aged care and for compassion in the sector, having contributed to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. In conversation with Fiona Wright, Sarah explores her own work and discusses the role of the National Poet Laureate and its position in promoting poetry and mentoring up- and-coming poets. Always insightful, challenging and endlessly human, this will be a wonderful exploration of poetry and all that it means.
